A few of my favorite things

As I travel throughout the western U.S. for the Taste of Home Cooking School, I’m often asked what my favorite kitchen gadget or tool is.  I always struggle to come up with just one thing!  I admit, I’m a kitchen gadget collector, and I love to try fun, new tools at home, and then take the best of them on the road with me to my shows.  So, I thought I’d share a few of my favorites with you!  I’ve included links to where I found some of them, but you might be able to find them in a local store.  And don’t forget to look for more fun gadgets on www.shoptasteofhome.com!

I’d probably be lost without my microplane grater; it’s so handy for fresh citrus zest, Parmesan cheese and chocolate!  I use it all the time🙂

I recently found an avocado multi-tool that I’m taking on the road with me this spring, and I love it!  Fresh avocados are great, and now it’s so much faster and easier to get them ready to use.

Silicone scrapers or spatulas also get a lot of use in my kitchen.  I probably have 8-10 different colors and sizes, which may or may not seem like a lot to you!  A fellow Culinary Specialist, Jamie Dunn, introduced me to the Scoop & Spread, and I find myself using it all the time!

Onion goggles are one of my new favorites; I’ve always struggled with cutting onions because I get teary-eyed every time!  And believe me, I tried all of the different tips and tricks out there, but the onion goggles have saved the day!  As you can see from the photo, I definitely use them at my shows🙂

Finally, I love cooking with fresh herbs, so I was excited to come across some herb scissors with 3 blades, to make preparation of the herbs even faster!

These are just a few of the things I enjoy using in my kitchen.  What are some of your favorite gadgets?

  1. I have the avacado multi tool and I love it! It is the ONLY thing I need to cut, core and scrape my avacados! Found it in a small kitchen store in South Central Kansas. It works like a gem!

  2. I like the onion goggles idea, have to find me some. I like my pampered chef garlic peeler, so simple but like using it.

  3. My favorite gadget in my kitchen is my adjustable apple slicer from Chefs. It will make either eight or sixteen slices and makes apple pie prep a snap!

  4. I would really like to know where I can get one of those pepper grinders that you use with one hand, I saw it at the cooking show in Carson City Nevada. It was shaped kind of like a ball and you squeeze it,
