Tell us something about yourself that very few people know? I am a culinary hand model.
If we were to open your refrigerator at home, what would we find? You would find tons of fresh fruit, great cheeses, olives, great condiments, and dessert wine.
What is your favorite book? Hands down, The Pro Chef.
Do you have any special holiday traditions? What foods were cooked for celebrations or special events? Every holiday I like making special foods from scratch like my family did many years ago. What was your favorite food growing up? Italian food and Captain Crunch.
When did you start cooking? Who taught you to cook? I started cooking at age 9 and my Nan and my Mom were the ones who taught me how to cook.
Do you remember your grandmother’s cooking? What was her specialty? Very much so! Her speciality was Hungarian and comfort food. It was all comfort food from her loving hands.

Great show in Lancaster PA last night! This was my first show, and I know I’ll be back at the next one. The tips from Michael were wonderful! Thanks for a fun evening!
Enjoyed your show again this year. Brought my son with me this time. He has CP and can’t cook but is a real “Foodie”. Loves everything about food. Has always liked watching me cook but enjoys the taste testing the best. He enjoyed your presentation and still is talking about your “technical” term “Plop”. Made me write down all your little pieces of baking advice too. So thanks for a fun evening from me, my Mom, her friend and most of all my son JJ.
You tell your son that’s how us Taste of Home foodies roll…we make up our own terms and technics, we just don’t follow. I’m so glad you bought your family. Don’t forget to put a little Taste of Home in your holiday season and Plop, Plop, Plop away-
Hi Michael! We enjoyed your show tonight in Beaver, Pa. This was our third show and my favorite so far! Your food looked amazing, jealous that we did not get to win a dish. Be safe on your tour and enjoy this weather. I know we are!

Hey Jordon,
The cake you made me ROCKED! I ate some after the show in my room, more today when I got to my hotel in Lewistown, PA. and I’m trying to save my wife a fork full for Sunday when I get back to Philly… Oh well, there it goes-

Really great show in Beaver PA. Michael is so fun to listen to and to watch. Made sure we all could see and hear him. Dissappointed that not so many give aways but my friend and I will be back next year and hope for more. Nutrition values for all recipes at the show and in the magazines would be greatly appreciated
Michael, what can I say! as much fun this year as was last even though this crowd was a bit more subdued. Thanks for all the tip but I do have one question for you. you said flour you choc chips-can I do that when making cookies too?
Thanks again
Susie Knapp
Absoulutly Susie, you got the idea. Flour is a great coating for alot of things that may stick. It free’s them up like the tacky brie from then mini quish we did. Enjoy!
I was at the taste of home cooking show in Gloversville NY with Chef Michael he is an outstanding host . He has a lot of energy and was vary informative the love he has for what he is doing shows in the way he presents himself to the audience . I was most impressed and saddened with the fact that this his 100th show was on the day of his grandmothers passing ,my family and I and over 800 people from Gloversville and surrounding area were blessed to have him in our town tonight . Our harts are saddened by your loss . Thank you Chef Michael for being with us and letting us be with you this night .

Missed you in Lewiston, Me. Thinking of you in time of loss.
Thank you so much Dee, it means a lot to me-
Thank you for a wonderful show last night at Williamsport, PA. It was a blast, as usual. Love all the great tips that you give while you demonstrate. You make everything look so easy and delicious. Plus love all your stories and jokes. (Also, good to know that you don’t do everything perfect all the time) Again, thanks for coming to our area. Have a wonderful holiday season
Thank you for a wonderful day at Gloversville Middle School. I enjoyed the prep work in the morning and the show at night was super. My condolences to you and your family on the loss of your wife’s grandmother. I am not sure if I would have been able to continue on throughout the day and evening after getting such news.
Looking forward to next year!
Thanks so much Lenora. We had some fun and did a lot of work thanks to you all. Thanks for your kind words-
Hi Chef Michael . I received your email on the carrot cake thank you for your kind words my son Jordan keeps asking if me if we should submit it to taste of home magazine and im not sure if you may have forwarded it already or if you feel it was the type or recipe the taste of home is looking for. im look forward to hearing from you and thanks again you put on an excellent show .
Hi Chef Michael. I really enjoyed the show in Albany, NY last night. I learned a great deal and got some great tips on cooking. Enjoyed the show. Thank you so much for your tips. Can’t wait to cook some of the recipes. I really can’t wait till the next show next year.
Great show in Lancaster this year. We’ve gone 4 x now and will be there next year. You gave us some super easy tips and I want to make many of the recipes you showed us. Just hope we win something next time! Your neighbor from Delaware County originally,,,now in LanCo.
Hi Chef Michael – I was at the Albany NY show Thursday night. I enjoyed the recipes and picked up some good tips for the recipes you made and will apply that to other recipes I make. I love TOH magazine and was very much looking forward to attending the show. This was my first time attending a TOH Cooking School. Based on the high caliber magazine which TOH is – I was anticipating something a bit different for the Cooking School. The vendors at the pre-show should have been all about cooking, utensils, dishes, food, etc. I did not expect jewelry, pocketbooks and basement remodeling. There wasn’t enough vendors to keep you occupied for two hours before the show. So I guess we were just there early to save a seat – ticket/seat numbers could solve that. The doors opened at 5:00 show starting at 7:00 and went until 9:00 pm – all this with not one morsel of food at a cooking show??? I must say I was very hungry throughout and smelling the food was torture. The Holiday Inn employee at the front desk told me they called her to come in to work because so many people were coming in to buy food and coffee at the snack bar. Guess I wasn’t the only one who came from work without eating. I wish the show had fewer guests to be a more intimate gathering, samples served to everyone of what you were making as it made, etc. I would have paid more for the ticket for a smaller more personal “test kitchen” sort of a feel experience.
Joans comments were good. I especially liked the idea of sharing the menu item as they are prepared. If the crowd is large as in Beaver PA, could possible do one section and then another section with the next item. We didn’t have a snack bar as our show was at the High School but we in the VIP did have tasty appetizers before the show which made all the wonderful food aromas Chief Michael prepared more bearable.
Looking forward to next year
I do agree with you. I also thought that we needed samples as well. Was also really hungry too by the end of the show. I thought that the crowd was good. I would not like a more intimate setting. It was fine the way that it was, maybe a few samples of food.
Well Joan, seams like you had a tough 1st Taste show. We used to give samples years ago but with so many allergies out there and the legalities of things, we just can’t. As far as vendors, the media try’s to get a variety of vendors, as most of the food variety but It’s a tough economy as you know and things are tough. Every show is differant being in a differant town with differant media and everyone works hard at putting on a great show. Lot’s of my shows are 1000- 2000 attendees so small is tough to do on our scale. I hope you’ll come back and try a differant show.
Hope you have a nice holiday-
Great Show today in Lowville NY. Glad you could come back this year! Hope we get to see you again next year. Already making plans for a VIP ticket next time. and who knows, maybe next time I can win one of those door prizes.
I had the best time at your show with my daughter, we both love to cook. This is your third show we have been to. This year we did theVIP ticket, it was great. Lowville was wonderfull, hope you come back next year!
Linda Hutchinson
WOW, I’m humbled by hearing you’ve been to 3 shows this year alone! I love doing the show in Lowville, NY. it could possibly be my favorite place and show. If you come see me again and see me on stage, give me a shout!
Have a wonderful holiday with your family, that’s the real story hear-
Great show yesterday in Lowville NY.Had a great time with my mom and sisters, already planning on going next year. The tips and shortcuts were very helpful.Perhaps the crew could make one of the recipes beforehand and for a small charge one could buy a sample to “preview”….i.e..the stuffed mushrooms or maple cinnamon rolls.Definitely will tell friends to attend next year.
Well Cindy, you better get a VIP ticket next year cause that’s exactly what they had. Several of the recipes from stage were made into appetizers and passed for them in their meet & greet room. You called it!
It’s always a treat coming back to Lowville, see ya soon-
Always better late than never to make a comment right? I attended your show in Derry earlier this month with some mom’s from our mom’s club for the 2nd time. You have done an exceptional job both times. We love the energy you have and the tips you share. I love coming home and trying the new recipes you demonstrated. We didn’t win anything…but there is always next year! Only suggestion is the camera…the way the light/camera were positioned made it difficult to see on the screen. Keep up the great work and I look forward to the show next year.
Hey Christen, thanks for the kind words. I love doing the show in NH and the drive- THE BEST! It’s sometimes a crap roll when trying to get a good picture. Your at the mercy of many things, sorry you couldn’t see to go but i bet your nose loved the show!
Thanks again and see ya next year!
What a great show in Warminster, Bucks County, PA last night. We learned a lot and can’t wait to try to stuffed mushrooms. And the apple upside down cake. And the veggie lasanga. Oh and that pineapple dressing for the chicken salad–yum! Great location and the Marketplace had lots of sampling by Weis Markets and others…good variety of vendors. Can’t wait for the next show!
I really enjoyed the show tonight in Columbus, Ohio. You, and your staff, did a great job. You really motivated me to cook! This was my second show. I won tickets my first time. I brought a friend this time and she loved it, too. I was a little disappointed in the lack of vendors this year; there were probably half of what they had last time I went. My only real complaint is that they ran out of cookbooks. I was prepared to buy a few, as was my friend, for ourselves and gifts but they ran out. I actually got the last “best of” and my friend had to settle for a different one. Hopefully, if you pass the word on, they will be better prepared next year. Again, great show. Thank you. Signed, a Philly Girl…
Hi E,
The cookbooks REALLY go fast. If you go to shoptasteofhome.com you’ll see all the amazing cookbooks we offer. Better get some for the holidays!
Yo Philly in the HOUUUUSE!!
See ya on stage-
Hi Chef Michael – I attended the Columbus, OH cooking school. It was my third one. I was excited to hear you would be back. Hope to see you next year. I agree with Elizabeth about the number of vendors. The number seem to shrink each year. However, the food the vendors had was great. You were great, as usual. The prizes were great – didn’t win any =( Maybe next year.
See you then.
Well thanks for coming back Debbie and I was excited to be back. It’s tough out there in this economy for small buisiness’s to expend additional money’s and the first thing they cut is a once a year show but Columbus has some very unique venders and even if they are few, they are MIGHTY!
I’ll see you on tasteofhome.com-
I again attended the Taste of Home Cooking Show at Verona NY. Michael, you are one of are very best chiefs. We enjoyed everything about the show. Like I said, i have attended many of the shows here in upstate NY and you are the favorite amoung my friends. Thank you for coming back to Verona at the Turning Stone Casino.
This year was the first time they offered “VIP” seating and it was amazing. We were able to “meet and greet” and we had great seating. Can’t wait until next year.
Thank you!!!!
I love to hear from my VIPers and I think I had as much fun as you all. Keep comin back and I’ll make sure to keep COOKIN!
Great show at Turning Stone last night, it was my first one and I really enjoyed it! You had a great energy and sense of humor! The tips you shared for each recipe were great.
I was wondering if you could tell me a good ingredient to use as a substitute for mustards and the spices like mustard flour, I see a lot of recipes with it (including a few you made last night) and I am allergic to it. Any suggestions you have would be much appreciated, I am sick of avoiding recipes because of this.
Tiffany, I don’t know what I would do if I couldn’t eat mustard so… this is a tough one. Don’t avoid, adapt! There’s so many condiments out there and my pantry is loaded with all kinds of sauces, spices and the like that I just keep changing until I find what tastes good. I’m not answering your question, am I. Mustard usually has some type of vinegar, so I would get balsamic, cidar, malt and sherry vinegars. This should do the trick.
Hope this helps, and have the best holidays!
I have been to about 10 TOH shows over the past years. I have loved them all, except I was disappointed with this one. You were great, as always and I loved your tips, or at least the ones I could hear. The problem was the acoustics. I and the many people around me were not able to hear much of what was being offered.
Janice, I’m so sorry you couldn’t hear me very well. It can be tough to get everything perfect at these differant venues I’m at. Please come back and when you see me say, Hay- make sure I can hear your big mouth this time. All do all I can-
I attended the cooking school at the Turning Stone Casino in Vernon, NY on November 1, 2012. Michael was our instructor and did a wonderful job. However the venue was problematic, to me anyway. The seats were too close together. Obesity is an issue in NYS and the country and it reared its ugly head at this show due to the seating. The seats were too close together and were hooked together so you could not move them for proper spacing. I think I shared 1/2 my seat with the person next to me and not by choice. There was ample room at the venue so that the seats could have been better placed for the comfort of the attendees. Not sure if I will attend another show at this venue.
Hi Addie,
I totally understand what your saying and I’m sure if you would of asked one of the workers there, they would of accomadated you easily. The seats are designed that way so they don’t get pushed around for safety in such a large room with so many people. Please come back and if you can’t get satisfaction and you see me on stage pre-show, I’ll make things right!
See ya on stage!
This is the 3rd year that I have attended the show at the Turning Stone on Nov 1. Loved everything about the show, you offer great tips and keep t he audience totally interested from beginning to end! Hope to see you again next year!
Howdy All…just wanted to say Thank You for a GREAT show today in Plattsburgh NY…!!! The vendors were all very nice…there seemed to be a few less then years before but still all very nice. Michael Barna was AWESOME…!! Thank you Michael..!! The recipes that were shown were wonderful to look at and seemed very easy to make…cant wait to try all of them…!! As always, a good time was had by everyone in my group..!! Cant wait for next year…!! thanks again..!!
I’m so glad you all had a great time Penny. Don’t forget to go on shoptasteofhome.com for a variety of our wonderful cookbooks like the new Best Loved Recipes cookbook that would make a terrific holiday gift for anyone!
Happy Holidays!
I attended your show today….a first timer. I enjoyed it so much. Not only are you informative, but your practical tips (like the disposable gloves….I got mine in the hardware section of a local store) are great. I am already looking forward to next years show and hope you will return here to the north country. By the way, maybe many grannies used Grannie Smith apples, this is Macintosh country so we all learned to make apple pie with macs. We do have a wide variety and I know I am already planning to mix varities to come up with a special flavor.
Well, I found that out after I spoke to some great North Country folks around the largest family owned Macintosh booth pre-show. They offered to give me a tour when I return next year and I can’t wait.Make that upside down apple pie for your holiday dinners and I sure you’ll be the talk of your family!
Have great holidays and enjoy them-
Planning to make that apple pie. Made the mini cinnamon buns and they were devoured by the staff at the gym. Going to make another batch but this time use maple sugar in place of the brown and add chopped roasted walnuts….My only issue with making these is getting the dough to stay as you roll it out. Any suggestions? My arms got one heck of a work out….thanks
Thank You for the great show in Plattsburgh today, the first I have attended. I have used taste of home recipes for years now. The only magazine that I have used and the recipes really turns out. I have not had any turn out bad yet. I have increased the serving mega times or changed the recipes to my taste and still good to go. If you do not have something change it up. Still turns out yummy. I always said I do not know how to cook, I am no longer sure I can say that. The sweet pea salad and the Chicken Pot Pie have been the greatest hits in my husband’s place of business.
Thanks Again
That’s It, you seam as though your on a great track and it’s easy when you go to tasteofhome.com. We have an awful lot of recipes for the upcoming holidays so change just one traditional dish on your menu and surprize your family. I’m sure they’ll all enjoy it.
Take care-
Hi Michael, I spoke to you today about the recipe that I was wondering if you could help me find out what the name of it was. You told me to email you. I have a scan of the picture but did not know how to include it in this email. Just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your presentation today. It was my first cooking school show and my friend and I loved it. Your recipes looked great, we were wishing we would have won one of them. Loved your great cooking tips and love your sense of humor. Great show, really enjoyed it, was our first and will not be our last. Hope to see you there again next year. Just loved it. I have lots of the Taste of Home books and love them. Great recipes with ingredients that you have at home, not a lot of fancy ingredients that you have to buy once and never use again. And they are recipes from normal everyday people. Thanks for any help you can give me in the hunt for this recipe. Like I said I have tried the advanced search but it does not work well at all. Thanks again, take care, Debbie
Tried to post a pic on here but couldn’t.
OK Debbie, please send the picture to my email to michael_barna@rd.com. I’m getting closer-
Thanks so much for the kind words Debbie, means a lot when your on the road to hear people really do get a lot from the show and had a good time. I’ll get right on your search and I’m sure we’ll get to the bottom of it. You have a wonderful holiday and if you could, please attach your email on another post if you would and I’ll respond as soon as I find it-
Thanks again
Hi Michael, it’s Debbie, my email is debhemm@sympatico.ca
I really appreciate you checking this out for me. I wish they would put a little tag near the recipes they advertise. Thanks again for a great show, just loved it, I love taste of home, I have all their annuals back to 1994 and many, many of the other books also. I had a group of friends one night for supper and every recipe I made came from taste of home, It was fun. Thanks again, just wanted to tell you also how much I loved and agreed with your comments about bringing families back to the table together. We need to get back to some of the great values and traditions we were raised on. Take care, Debbie
Well Debbie,
As you know by know we found your recipe!! Yeaaaaaaaa and your so right, get those kids, family & friends back to the dinner table and talk about everything. That was our time to care and share when I was little.
See ya next year and have a great holiday season!
Hi Michael, thank you for such an interesting and fun show in Buffalo on November 10! My mom and I are making it an annual tradition to go to the Taste of Home Cooking School – we love the recipes but we adore your awesome personality! Thank you again!! Hope to see you next year in Buffalo!!!
Thanks sooooo much for the kind words and I’m happy you enjoyed yourself.
See ya on STAGE next year!
Just saw Michael do a fantastic show in Buffalo. You could tell he was really having fun and the food looked phenomenal. He really has a lot of great tips and tricks that he shared and he makes it look so easy. Needless to say I was totally inspired and couldn’t wait to get back to my kitchen. Thanks Michael, you’re the best! Can’t wait to see ya at the next show.
Thanks thattouchofminkk,
I hope you had as good of a time as I did. Some shows you just get inspired and something about that show just made me feel great and I hope it showed.
Hope to see you at my last 3 shows in Mansfield, OH, Xenia, Oh or Ashtabula, OH.
See ya on STAGE!
Hi Michael…Just wanted to say thanks for the wonderful show tonight here in Mansfield. I loved the recipes and you are truly a captivating performer. It was a real blast and I am looking forward to seeing more shows to see what else you will come up with.
Hi Chef Michael – Thank you for taking the time to autograph my cookbook at the Buffalo show last Saturday. This was the 4th show I have attended with you as the presenter & as usual, I had a great time and have some great motivation for cooking. The Upside-Down Apple Pie is on our Thanksgiving menu for sure! Can you please pass along my request for a future venue closer to Rochester NY? My suggestions would be Canandaigua (check out Finger Lakes Community College or Finger Lakes Casino for auditoriums) or Henrietta (perhaps Monroe Community College).
Hi terry,
Thanks for the leads! I’ll pass it on to the power’s that be… It makes my heart fly when I hear that I helped motivate you. That’s what it’s all about! You get it!! That pie is a MUST.
May all your carmalizing turn to gold over the holiday’s and see ya on STAGE!
Chef Michael,
This was the first time I’ve experienced this form of entertainment & I cannot stop talking about your Cooking School I attended last night. Your performance was exciting, informative & inspiring. I always am a little bit intimidated by trying new dishes, but since I am armed with new tips, I feel more confidence. Imagine what I can accomplish now that I know how to correctly use a garlic masher!
I feel I was very lucky to speak with you after the show. Thanks for taking some time for us. We are looking forward to the next Cooking School, & maybe I’ll get on stage…I’d love to be one of your Angels!
You never responded to my mail of this I sent you-
Sent from my iPhone
MSB—Thanks for sharing….it was great to learn so much and has given me a lot to consider. Timing is everything and key to the the future. Best wishes….
Looking forward to seeing you in Corning , NY this spring. Was wondering if you will include some Glueten Free recipes. Thanks .
