I have a lot of great memories of Halloween, so when I thought about what to share with you this time, I thought it would be fun to go back several years. When I was little, my brothers and sister and I always had a lot of fun. My mom has always planted a big garden, and pumpkins were some of my favorite things to watch for. It was so fun to see how big they’d get by the time October rolled around. I remember choosing a pumpkin during the summer to claim as “my pumpkin” and I’d constantly check it to see how big it was getting. Here is a photo of me, along with two of my brothers and my sister. We were so excited about the pumpkins!
Sometimes we would carve the pumpkins, but other years, we’d paint them instead. My mom found some photos of painted pumpkins in a magazine, and since she paints all the time, she had plenty of paint for us to use. Some of us tried to copy the pumpkins in the magazine, but my brothers came up with their own ideas. What do you think of these?
Another memory I have is of course, food related. During my freshman year of college, one of my roommates made a delicious pumpkin sheet cake, using a recipe her grandmother had given her. I think she got it from Taste of Home, because you can find the recipe here: http://www.tasteofhome.com/Recipes/Pumpkin-Sheet-Cake
It’s so yummy!! I love anything made with pumpkin, and this recipe quickly became one of my favorites. I’ll be home for the next few days before heading out to my next show; maybe I’ll make this cake along with some homemade chili and cornbread. It wouldn’t be Halloween without those three things!
